Climbing in Tromso

Hi there,
I am flirting with the idea of studying in Tromso - I was told, that there would be good climbing, which is an important criteria for me. Though looking at the climat diagrams I was wondering how many months in the year the weather is good enough for rock climbing (like in the picture above)?
Are rocks easy to reach?
Would you recommend Tromso or should I rather go to France?

Besides that: I read a lot about cross-country skiing in Tromso. Is it also a good place for real skiing?

I found a little (English) information on the internet, but I still don't have a good picture. It would be great if you could tell me a little more.
Thanks,
Martin

Hello Martin,

If you are looking for a long and convenient climbing season Tromsø might not be the right place for you. However, there is lots of good climbing in the area. Many of the crags require you to walk for 30-45 minutes before you can tie yourself in to the rope, but there is also easily accessible bouldering right next to the road if thats what you're after.

Hopefully someone else can tell you how many months of climbing you can expect to get, but my guess is something like from may to september. Depending on weather the season very well might be longer.

I'm not quite sure what you mean with "real skiing", but I can assure you that the skiing in Tromsø is quite real. And excellent. There are lot's of mountains that you can reach within half an hour drive from the city, and with the help of climbing skins the descents are nearly limitless.

In general, Tromsø is a great place for outdoor life activities. But if you are looking for convenient cragging all year in the outdoors you might wanna look somewhere else.

Hope this answer can help you clarify things a little.

Thank you for your answer! Sounds like the climbing season is longer than I thought.

 Hello!

I have started rock climbing recently. I'm going to visit Norway in July for a period of a month (while participating in an exchange program of medicine students). In this period I have 3 options where to be stay: Bergen or Tromsø or Trondheim
Which of the 3 places do you recommend mechoose?
& where can I find a guidebook for the routes in this area?

* I'm climbing routes graded ~5C (French)
* I have a good experience only in sport climbing.
* I prefer to climb outdoor
* I will be able to move only by public transportation.
* I will like to spend some of my time in mountaineering also.
Thanks a lot

  mechoose* = me to choose

The rock climbing season is usually May - September, but I think April and October can be fine too. On the other hand, it never gets too hot in the summer (which it can be in France, I would guess), and you can climb all night long due to midnight sun. And the skiing season, at least for ski-touring, lasts until June, which is kind of unbeatable.

As stated above, if rock climbing is the single most important thing to you, then France is probably better than Tromsø. But if you want to combine it with a long skiing season, no crowds in the mountains, midnight sun, northern lights and access to the ocean, then Tromsø is the choice.

Hi
I live in Kirkenes and will be visiting Tromsø for a couple of days in March, so I am wondering if the Climbing/Bouldering wall is open to Non Members? as we will want to train while we are in Tromsø.

The climbing gyms are open to anyone willing to wave goodbye to 80 kroner and holding a Brattkort. There's a discount for club members at the TKK wall.

And there's bouldering too for fifty kroners a shot.
